New Product Introduction: Model VK490
Viking is pleased to announce the addition of the new Model VK490 sprinkler to our leading Freedom residential sprinkler line. The VK490 is a 5.8 (84) K-factor, flat plate concealed, residential horizontal sidewall sprinkler. This new sprinkler complements the existing Model VK480 flat concealed sidewall, introduced in May of 2010, which has a K factor of 4.0 (58). Like the VK480, the new VK490 sprinkler provides the installation advantages of a horizontal sidewall sprinkler, together with the enhanced aesthetics of a flat cover plate.
The new VK490 is offered in 74°C and 96°C temperature ratings and is cULus listed for coverage areas as large as 16 x 20 ft (4,9 x 6,1 m). Like the VK480, the new VK490 has a takeout dimension of under 2 inches (50 mm), which allows it to be installed in a standard 2 x 4" stud space. The VK490 comes standard with the special ¾ in (20 mm) pipe guide and hardware. Although not required for installation, the pipe guide helps ensure that the sprinkler is located the correct distance from the face of the finished wall.
With the introduction of the new VK490, Viking now offers four residential sprinklers with a K-factor of 5.8 (84), which is the largest K-factor available with a ½ inch NPT thread size (15 mm):
Model VK472 – Freedom® 5.8 (84) K factor residential pendent
Model VK460 – Freedom® 5.8 (84) K factor residential horizontal sidewall
Model VK474 – Freedom® 5.8 (84) K factor residential flat plate concealed pendent
Model VK490 – Freedom® 5.8 (84) K factor residential flat plate concealed horizontal sidewall
With their larger K-factors, these sprinklers can deliver the greater densities required in high-rise residential structures at lower starting pressures (NFPA 13 system with 0.1 gpm/ft density requirements). And, with a ½ inch NPT thread size, the VK490, as well as the other Freedom 5.8K sprinklers, can be installed using a less expensive ½ inch CPVC sprinkler head adapter, compared to a ¾ inch adapter.
Because the VK480 and VK490 models look virtually identical, the new VK490 will have the model designation laser marked on the face of the sprinkler. See technical data below for details. Please note that both the VK480 (4.0K) and the new VK490 (5.8K) use the same installation wrenches and cover plates.
